  • House Republicans Vote to Cripple Amtrak’s Funding and Eliminate High-Speed Rail Funding
    Updated On: Jun 28, 2013

The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved a draft fiscal 2014 appropriations bill for the Departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development. In this bill, Amtrak’s funding has been cut by nearly 30% and high-speed rail funding has been eliminated.

Representative David Price (D-NC) offered amendments to restore funding for high-speed rail and to restore Amtrak’s funding to 2013 levels, however, both amendments failed on a party line vote, 22 (D) to 28 (R).

Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman ripped the proposed funding levels saying “It’s woefully insufficient for what needs to be done, and Congress knows that.” Boardman also warned that the proposed funding cuts “puts every one of our services at risk,” and could hamper safety efforts.

We will pass along instructions and more information as it becomes available.
