On Wednesday, BRS Representative of Communications Justin Pier appeared on The Rick Smith Show to discuss the urgent threat posed by efforts to weaken federal railroad safety regulations.
Brother Pier joined the program to inform listeners about a push by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) to roll back critical inspection requirements, including those for signal systems and training standards. These proposals, currently under review by the U.S. Department of Transportation, risk undermining safety practices that have protected communities and rail workers for decades.
The discussion focused on how proposed changes to 49 CFR Parts 234 and 236 could lead to reduced oversight of the very systems that prevent derailments, equipment failures, and accidents involving hazardous materials.
Brother Pier explained that signalmen play a vital role in keeping the public safe, and that reducing inspections or training undermines the integrity of the entire rail system. These regulations were put in place for a reason and have proven essential in ensuring the safety of both workers and the public.
This podcast appearance is part of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen’s broader public outreach campaign to shed light on these proposed changes and encourage union members, allies, and the general public to speak out.
The Rick Smith Show, a nationally syndicated labor-focused podcast and radio program, offered an ideal platform to highlight this issue and reach an audience concerned about worker protections and public safety.
